If there’s one goal that the Shop & Enroll blog strives toward each day, it’s to make our readers’ happier and healthier in their lives. We’re not alone in this drive. In fact, there’s an entire day devoted to promoting healthy living in seniors around the country.
If you’re looking to make a healthy change to your life, there’s no better time to start than National Senior Health & Fitness Day. Whether it’s through eating better, exercising, or just making healthier choices, you’ll be achieving the goals of this nationally celebrated festival of living well.
What is Senior Health & Fitness Day?
Now entering its 25th year, National Senior Health & Fitness Day is a nationally recognized health and wellness event celebrated at over 1,200 locations. Local senior or health organizations sponsor or host their own events with the aid and guidance of the Fitness Day team. Popular programs held at these events include, walking tours, group exercises, health fairs, and more.
“Older adults of all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate in National Senior Health & Fitness Day. Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in their communities.” — Patricia Henze, National Senior Health & Fitness Day program manager
National Senior Health & Fitness day is held each year on the last Wednesday of May. This year’s events will take place on May 30 and the theme will be “Active Today…Healthier Tomorrow.” You can find a local event at local parks, gyms, senior communities, hospitals, or YMCAs, to name a few.
How to Celebrate?
The National Senior Health & Fitness Day is all about promoting a healthier lifestyle. This gives you many ways that you can observe. As mentioned above, you can look for events nearby at any of the locations listed. Those aren’t the only locations worth checking out, though. Many malls, banks, and state or local departments of aging will host National Senior Health & Fitness Day events. You can see examples of events held in previous years in the National Senior Health & Fitness Day media collection.

If you’re unable to make it to a sponsored event, it doesn’t mean you can’t take part in your own. After all, National Senior Health & Fitness Day is only one day each year. Getting healthier is a year-round commitment. You’ll need to find a way to work out beyond that single day. Try following a fitness YouTube channel, joining a fitness program, or training for a marathon or 5K. Or, it could be as simple as golfing, gardening, or jogging. For more ideas, you can check out our Health page or National Senior Health & Fitness Day’s Senior Health Resources page.
A healthier lifestyle is accomplished through more than exercise, though. Some pretty convincing evidence actually shows that your diet is more influential in weight loss. So, use National Senior Health & Fitness Day and our Diet section to kick-start healthier eating!
